This really depends on your quantitative score. Most engineering programs look very carefully at your quantitative score and not so much at your verbal. If your quantitative score is not very good, then consider applying to programs that do not require GRE scores. For example, the George Washington University does not require GRE scores for admission (but they do require it for assistantship and fellowship purposes). Do some research and once again, if you have a good quant score, go ahead and apply to the programs you want. The University of Michigan has an excellent mechanical engineering program. If you speak German, you may also want to consider studying in Germany. This country offers excellent programs in mechanical and automobile engineering.
Good luck!
