Some of them are legitimate but employers will only accept certain degrees from them. Typically only associates degrees are accepted from online colleges but it really depends on what you are trying to get your bachelors in.

There are many different levels of online colleges and degrees.

Level 1: SCAM
Any “college” with a .com URL or that offeres “life experience degrees” (AKA degrees for doing nothing but paying for them) is a complete and total scam. These are also known as diploma mills.

Level 2: Scammy
Private colleges with no accreditation, national accreditation, or an accreditation from a fake accrediting body. These are also scams because you will end up with an illegitimate degree.

Level 3: A bit more Legitimate
Online private schools with regional accreditation. Some of these still have issues. See http://www.capella-sucks.com and http://www.uopsucks.com .

Level 4: LEGIT
Public (state) colleges with .edu URLs and a *REGIONAL* accreditation that offer online classes. Most state colleges offer online classes as part of their normal degree programs. There are even 3 state schools that are entirely online: Thomas Edison State College ( http://www.tesc.edu ) in NJ, Excelsior College ( http://www.excelsior.edu ) in NY and Charter Oak State College ( http://www.charteroak.edu ) in CT.
