No. He doesnt need to pay money for a class, but he should buy a few books at the local bookstore and take some home practice tests and time himself-just like the real thing

I did. I went and took it with 4 other people. I was the only one who had not studied at all for it. And I was the ONLY ONE who passed! So, I would say, yes. Maybe it’s best not to study the first time around. And if he doesn’t pass, at least he’ll know where he needs to improve.

**And by “pass” I mean that I made the score I needed in order to get into the grad. program I wanted. (And all 5 of us were aiming for the same score.)***

He probably should study a little, at least enough to get a hang of how the test is given, so that he can let his natural intelligence shine through. I only studied for two days before my test, because I wasn’t about to wear myself out for months to get a couple more points, and I did very well. And you can always retake the GRE.
