Ideally it takes four years. Having a PhD is very cool and yes professor is a great job. Honestly, in four years from now when you do have phD, money should be good and jobs available. I would say professor with PhD make maybe 100,000 nowadays..dependent on the university you would instruct at.

Nope, wont be easy at all. Just because you will have a doctoral degree does not mean you will get a position, only makes you eligible nothing more. Often several hundred qualified applications (all have doctorals) come in for one tenure-track opening. Even being a non-tenure lecturer can be intensely competitive.
