College instructors do not have to have a phd, i’ve had many instructors that are not professors, many grad students teach classes also. Dissertation is what you need to do for graduating from grad school.

It is proof of the ability to undergo a sustained project and bring it to a successful conclusion, to do work at the cutting edge of the discipline concerned, and to have an overview of the relevant work in the area that you teach.

I don’t think that gym instructors in college need a PhD, but no doubt they will get around to it eventually.

You don’t need a Ph.D. to teach in college, but if you’d like to teach at a university, you would need a Ph.D. High School teachers teach various subjects.

The vast majority of college professors have PhDs. In a few more practical fields like business and nursing, masters level professors are common.

There are other people who teach in colleges without having a PhD- graduate students. However, these students are usually close to having their PhD and are being supervised by a PhD.

There aren’t gym teachers in college. Some schools have classes in things like dance or swimming, but most often those aren’t for credit classes.
