Read up on Piaget, Chomsky, Krashen. When I was in grad school, helped me find resources quite a bit.
First and 2nd language acquisition is going to happen largely the same way in pre-pubescent children: perception before production, pruning of rules, etc. There have been some studies that show that truly billingual children have some delays in reading, but it levels off, and they end up surpassing their monolingual peers.
