What you are considered is “ABD,” and yes, I’d apply but let them know you’re an ABD candidate. They’ll probably offer you a lesser contract (i.e. a 1 year with potential for longer if you finish your Dissertation defense)

You can certainly still apply. Just make it clear in your application that you have not yet graduated and specify when you will.

Since you are applying for a position as an adjunct lecturer, you might be fine. However, the academic field is very competitive. Depending on where you are applying, you might be up against academics who have not only graduated but also have a strong publication record.

I’m currently updating my website and in two weeks I will add an article I have just written providing advice to postgraduate students and recent PhD graduates on how to publish their first peer-reviewed journal article. You might like to read it at http://www.eliteediting.com.au/resources.php

Having a strong publication record is a must when applying for competitive academic positions.

Good luck!
